One thing I've noticed in the same vein: most of the CAD-only generation have a hard time with freehand sketching. It's not only important while out in the field, but is of great use when trying to quickly express or interpret a (possibly verbally-related) concept. I.E., "Is this what you were thinking of?"
Many engineers are drawing-challenged, that's fine. Their forte is calcs and visualization, not necessarily transforming those talents and skills into something easily understood by a tradesman with a reasonably good understanding of the subject matter.
