I have been following the "debate" quite a bit and I think the CAD-only generation and the seniors needs to work hand in hand for thing to get right.
By the way, if you can't have a drawing board in the field, use the I-Sketch Field software developed by Alias. I-Sketch Field is an exciting new product working on the Pocket PC OS platform, addressing the needs of plant engineers who have to accurately and quickly capture as-built piping data in the field. The initial release will only really cater for the sketching of pipes on-site rather than verification of pipes created within a 3D model.
There are things that I don't understand, why is the seniors so worry about CAD? Leave it to the young chief designer. As a senior, you should be concentrating on writing Specification, equipment selection, calculations, stress analysis and equipment layout. All these can't be done without the years of experiences and can't be replacing by any software. Senior have got lot of things to worry about so leave the CAD to the youngters.
In addition, soon the young chap will also gain enough experience to move higher up and have to forgo their CAD and concentrate on their more routine task. Then new software will surface and theyoung chap will then have to follow the foot steps and facing the same "problems" of their senior. This is just process that keep repeating itself so why argue over it.
What I am trying to say here is no matter whether you are CAD-only generation or senior, you will learn to accept one another and work together. The senior can't do without the CAD operators and yet the youngters can't do without the advices from the senior.
