Different industries us e different definitions. The petrochem industry tends to use the former as you described and the water wastewater industry the latter. Other industries are mixture of the two. It is better practice to have separate flow diagrams to cover process and use P&IDs as piping and instrument diagrams.

What does P&ID stand for? From what I know and after refering to piping handbook, it stand for piping and instrument Diagrams. But a search on the website, says that it stand for process and instrument diagram. Now I am all confused. Can someone out there tell me exactly what P&ID stand for?
