There are (2) equations to use for calculating the K-factor for reducers.

  1. K = [0.8SIN(θ/2)(1-β^2)]/(β^4) θ <= 45 DEGREES
  2. K = [0.5(1-β^2) (SIN(θ/2))^0.5 ]/(β^4) 45 DEGREES < θ <= 180 DEGREES Where θ is the angle of convergence.

(Taken from the Crane Handbook.)

Please explain this angle of convergence. What exactly does it refer to? Which formula to use for say a 14"x6" reducer? Why?

Does the use of these formulas depend on whether the reducer is eccentric or concentric?
