This is a great idea. In fact we were discussing this last night at a Institution of Mechanical engineers committee meeting in Sydney. As you know it is a British organisation so for us out in the colonies it is difficult to get a critical mass. The thought of networking with engineers who could be of practical use to each other was the most positive way we saw of involving members in the Institution. A large number of our members work as freelance contractors and consultants. The networking approach certainly suits them when they need advice or support. With company downsizing and remote site postings this forum is a saviour to those stranded without their peers to help them. The Eng-Tips forum has a number of specialist forums so that the traffic of communication is directed to interested groups.

Paul, I know the mere concept makes some people uneasy, but there would be some value in knowing just a little about everyone in the group.
For
instance, I've been doing "specialty" stuff for nearly 20 years, but
absolutely no large scale petro chem, ever. I've had courses in and spent a
lot of hours wading thru B31.3, and always used it for guidance and a
standard, but mostly I do small scale, or highly corrosive, or ultra-high
purity piping, etc. Because of my area, I learn more by trial and chance
communication than anything else, but I find interesting tidbits here. If,
however, we had the opportunity to know just a bit of others' background and
interests, it might make it so that we could focus on the questions and
comments of some, and less on others, and even work out more direct
communication with an individual once in a while. Any thoughts from you or
others??
