1. the sifs are much hiher at right angles and the lateral momentum force is higher at right angles. Also the flow turbuluence at high velocities would be huge turning a 90 deg corner.

2. Analysis should always be as a complete system (s). Otherwise how are the correct disps , restraints and reactions going to be transferred between components.?
