I had intended using end suction pumps with strainer/foot valve mounted on a pontoon. So the whole thing is sort of a floating arm. The bottom of the strainer would be slightly (say 400mm) higher than the bottom of the pontoon; the idea being that the pontoon bottoms out before the foot valve hits the bottom. The problem is that the tails dam bottom is not clearly defined; just a gradual increase in density with depth, from soup to mud. More like a swamp than a lake.

Could you use a floating suction arm so that the intake is only 300mm below
the
surface? That way avoiding solids getting in the line in the first place? Or
perhaps a labyrinth of vertical plates so that solids drop out of the
bottom.
