Randy,
You could look at Foamglas insulation. That comes in rigid form. Used
primarily on hot oil insulations. It is expensive though.

Hi, I have a "situation" someone might be able to advise me about:
8-inch steel pipe, located outdoors, carries natural gas at 900 psi,
650 degrees F. The piping needs to be substantially insulated for
economy and to maintain process integrity, yet the insulation needs
to be either in the form of a coating, or fairly easily removable
every 3 to 5 years to allow inspection of the pipe for presence of
atmospheric corrosion (DOT requirement). Original design was rigid
calcium silicate (I think) and we are now using blankets, which are
removable, but provide less-than-satisfactory insulation. I hear
there are paint-on coatings which can serve this purpose and,
because it is a coating which bonds to the pipe, it would not be
required to be removed for inspection. Any advice/experience will be
appreciated.
