Intergraph (USA) developed an early CAD product called IGDS which was the graphics engine for the PDS (Plant Design System) - the IGDS code was given to Bentley for a 49% stake in the company and future usage rights - Bentley evolved IGDS into Microstation which PDS uses today.
CADCentre (now Aveva - UK) developed PDMS around the same time - mid 80's.
Both share the very high-end Plant Design market with about 1/3 going to PDMS and 2/3 going to PDS.
PDMS is primarily focused on the offshore - I think this is because of its UK base and proximity to the North Sea.
Both products have essentially the same capabilities and both have been used for virtually any process job imaginable.
I have recently evaluated PDMS and while I'm sure I have some bias (13 year PDS Admin guy) I think PDS is the stronger of the two.
