Yes, this is a poor description since there is an infinite number of planes that intersect the pump shaft. I suspect that it means when the piping is in the horizontal plane and connects with a pump a 90 degrees close to the pump suction flange, this is to be avoided.

   What does the following phrases mean. Suction piping is 1. In same plane as pump shaft. 2. Perpendicular to the pump shaft. Which is this plane? for a split casing multi stage centrifugal pump.
