Yes you grind off the weld at the tip. (the tip of the clamshell shape is
edge welded with 1/8" or 3/32 rod) this is easily ground off. the clamshell
edges are very flexible _ cone joint.
I cant say the names but several very big European and Ex british High
pressure plant builders use these commonly.(youd know the names right away)
Advantage is VOC/ lethal seal with joint flexibility.
Dont ahve to worry about the care you mentioned to keep the flange paris and
seal rings from getting separated. Made from edge rolled sheet steel.
when I have a minute (not for 10days because of course prep) i'll draw.

Er, well, actually, I have never heard of this set up! The arrangement I described in my earlier post was not the original design intent for that joint. It was a temporary fix to allow the system to go back into service temporarily and has since been replaced with a clean pair of flanges and a new ring. IIRC the ring was machined to suit a particular pair of flanges and care was required to ensure that the flange pairs and seal rings did not get separated.
Anyway AL, returning to the joint that you have described: is it possible for the additional seal ring to be removed without damaging the flanges and the main seal ring? What are the advantages of this type of joint over a butt weld?

barb is correct.
there is an additional insert seal ring that can be added that goes in
two
halves and is designed to be seal
welded at the edges to completely leak seal the joint (2nd backup).
(clamshell shape all the way round). the tips (top edge of the clamshell
gets welded.
used in volatile and lethal fluid apps.
never seen on the web. uncommon in NA. Common in europe. Perhaps Barb
could
