Sorry, i commented before I viewed your correction. It is OK now. NK Roy
Correction -------------------------
See how confusing it is - Rebis, now Bentley has AUTOPLANT.
The COADE product I referred to is actually CADWORX - just as Don mentioned as well.
My bad

Subject: RE: [PipingDesign] 3D CAD Piping Software
Paul,
I recently did an evaluation of the different Piping products out there.
As someone who has been supporting PDS and MicroStation for the last 13 years (also had in office project exposure to PDMS, Rebis (now Bentley) and CADPipe) my take is simply this - The choice of software and capabilities is almost as daunting as the piping discipline itself. My opinion is that basically you get what you pay for - you have to balance this out with what you need. The high end software - PDS, PDMS and Bentley's offerings need experienced hands - basically it will take a newbie a few projects before they fully understand what they have and how to use it effectively.
Software with fewer capabilities definitely has its place.
On the low end I would check out alias and cadpipe. They do a good job but it is labor intensive compared to the pricy big boys.
The sweet spot is probably Coade (the Caesar II guys) - their Autoplant is a good offering.
All these tools will require some configuration especially when it comes to specs (they usually provide generic specs to get you going) and it is still going to take some time to get up to speed. For Alias, Cadpipe and Coade's Autoplant you can easily drop a month, for a computer literate piper, (software setup, training, tweaking, cursing ...) before you see a performance gain - but once the gain comes it will be a big gain.
As for hand drawn - depends on the situation - I see nothing wrong with it - I had to do on a big construction job because of time constraints - long story.
Thanks for the great job you are doing - next big project I get on I'll be talking to you about the Discovery Channel idea - it's been in the back of my mind for a while too.
