To join in the fray:
I agree with the first comment in this thread - every time you walk near a high pressure pipeline, by a chemical plant or step on the brakes in your car, you are putting your life on the line that some engineer did his job. And here in the US, there are still plenty of places where a mechanic, garbage collector or low level bureaucrat makes much more for less effort.

Technical people are this century's blue collar workers - given a nominal salary, but then told they are expected to work 50% overtime with no compensation. The situation is ripe for some technical organization (are you listening, ASME?) to effectively represent engineers. After all, doctors got where they are by being members of an extremely effective union, with an expensive initiation fee.

Just a politically incorrect opinion

I found it very interesting as I'm sure many others did also.

I beleive the issue is that technical issues and solutions, such as provided    on this site have enormous value, many subscribers have expressed this fact.    We ought not forget this , underappreciate it , or undervalue it.

I have had the same conversations with engineers from Germany and England    and all over the world.

I sure hope the fellow didnt give him the detail drawings before he got the    commission.. unfortunately that hurts everybody including himself because it    comes to be expected, or expected next time.

There is a world wide trend for the "money men" to profit off the knowledge    and experience of others (knowledge which they themselves lack and do not    want ot invest in) , and expect to pay nothing for it. Try hiring any other    profession under the same basis as engineers and knwoledge workers are    expected.

I have no problem with frank and open discussion of such issues. I do not    beleive it will improve by "sweeping it under the carpet" as many try to do.

   Hi Rajendra

I think you may easily be forgiven for the occasional outburst. It did    result in a number of responses, with impressive speed.

For what its worth, I think the frustration you are experiencing is not    isolated to you and your country; I think its everywhere. Part of    engineering, perhaps.

   Cheers

   Steve

It would really be nice if you wouldn't indulge in writing the sort of mail    below, especially in this group thoroughly intended for technical    discussions. You may reserve your views to Paul (and anybody else) through    personal mails only.

Besides, your topic is highly sensitive....and I even beg to differ from    your view points. I wouldn't discuss that anyway here.

   With best regards,

   Dear Mr. Paul,

I under-stand that this group is to discuss the matters related to piping    engineering. Not the Indian attitude or Indian political system. I request    that kind of mail attached below should not be floated to entire group or    content is to be filtered.

   Dear Paul,
A Butterfly valve manufacturer had a problem with the Gear Actuator for    sizes above 350 mm NB. I knew a Mechanical Engineer of remarkable    achievements who offered to solve the problem, make a working model    (prototype) for a nominal fee of Rs.15,000/- (That is about US$300) only.    The manufacturer asked for a detailed drawing before he could make a    decision. This is the typical Indian attitude. The Engineer is the least    important person in India. Needless to say that the valve manufacturer is a    non technical person. On the other hand, the Doctor who would be "nowhere"    but for the sofisticated instruments designed and made by engineers, is a    highly respectable guy doing brisk "business" and earning through    "referrals".

You are well aware of the Indian Political system. You can not dismiss a    worker without serving him a charge-sheet and holding a hearing but you can    dismiss the Prime Minister without saying why the dismissal is sought. You    may remember that Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government lost a vote of    confidance in the Parliament by just One vote. And no reason was given for    the "No confidance motion".

I am an Indian and proud of my country and it's heritage. But a group of    about 550 MPs are driving this country down the hill and the brakes have    already blown out. Needless to say that they don't know what they are    doing. The reputation the Indian Standard Mark enjoys is good proof of    this.

You are welcome to come to India to enjoy yourself. Looks good on the blue    print - actually non existant.
   Regards,
   Rajendra Bajikar.
