Dear Vijay,
The equipment using a heating mirror which Gordon has described is widely used in the industry.

Also, HDPE pipe manufacturers usually have an arrangement with trained sub-contractors specialising in installing HDPE pipelines who use the above equipment. You can contact one of them and take a look at it. It produces a very neat joint.

The other method consists of heating HDPE rods and performing an operation similar to brazing with a wire. This can be used for low pressures and irregular jointing surfaces. Plastic water storage tanks can also be repaired using this method.

Method 1

The standard method is to put the two ends into a special jig and trim the two ends so that they are flush with each other when pushed together. They then insert a flat plate( heated by electric coils) between the two ends and push the two pipe ends against the plate. After a predetermined time the plate is quickly removed, and the two melted ends are pressed together. When the joint is cool, the material squeezed out of the joint is trimmed off.

Method 2
You can buy special tees, elbows and couplings with electric coils in the joint sections. They look like robust socket welded fittings. The pipe is simply inserted into the socket and an electric current passed through the electric coils. That melts the right part of the joint and fuses the pipe to the fitting. You also need specialist equipment to control the electric current.

I believe there are also welding techniques around which are used to weld together crazy shaped bits of HDPE. I am sure you could find details by surfing the web.

Method 1 is the cheapest and I have seen used for pipes up to about 14 inch. Method 2 is expensive and normally restricted to small bore pipe. I am not sure what diameter they can do up to using this technique these days.
