Dear Mohamed,
Valves, meant for regulating the flow of a fluid in a
line can be of different types depending on its
application. It varies from clear liquids and gases as
one category to viscous and fluid with solid in
suspension in the other. This is a very generous
classification. Specific service needs specific
valves.
Generally gate valves are used for on and off
services. Ball valve offers better regulation and
control of flow. The pressure drop against the above
two is such that the globe valve has a very high value
due to the changes in its course in the body of the
valve.
Ball and plug valves are used for on/off service as
well. But they are a little expensive as compared to
the gate valve. In addition to the above, there is a
wide spectrum of valves for special applications, the
discussion about that cannot be done in this forum, as
it is very vast.
I would suggest you read more about this in published
literature.
Good luck!
C. V. Gangadharan.
