Dear Paul,
The local laws in India grant protection to the author for upto 50 years. You
will have to check up on this in your country.
If there is a notice stating that the author has registered the article under
the appropriate copyright act, then you need his or her permission before you
can publish or release it. If these are technical articles from a now defunct
company, you will still need permission from the owners up to the number of
years granted to them under the act.
Regards,
Rajendra Bajikar.
