Mr Tanmoy,
It is the Pressure thickness which you need to check to which you need to
add 2.4 mm to avoid burn-through. However, another clause in Standard
practice is that minimum of 3/16" thickness to be available for performing
Hot Tap. Thickness check is done by UT check at different locations at Hot
Tapping point, more importantly at the locations where the Split Tee (Used
for Hot Tapping) welds onto the main pipe. Usually the existing pipe
supports would be sufficient to take the Hot tapping machine load.
Requirement of additional supports can be judged at site and more so along
with the Hot Tapping Vendor.

Subject: [PipingDesign] minimum base metal thickness for hot tapping
Dear members
As per API RP-2201 (refer clause 3.4) the actual
minimum base metal thickness for a hot tapping is a
âfunction of the thickness required for strength, plus
a safety factor, usually 2.4 mm, to prevent burn
through.â
Now what does it mean by âstrengthâ?
Is it the strength to sustain the internal pressure?
Or is it the strength to sustain the load generated
during hot tapping? Or is it both?
If it is both, then how we can calculate the load
generated during hot tapping operation and also the
required thickness.
I want the valuable suggestion from the group.
With best regards
