Mr Ali,
Technically, there is no limitation of using trunnions. Some companies limit use upto 3" (pipe to pipe or pipe to bend) to avoid welding to the forged fittings.
By default you shall use without pad. But for high temp lines (say 300 deg
C and higher), you may choose to enter the SIF at the trunnion.
You can calculate SIF at pipe or bend by manual formulas or by using
software Ceasar-II etc
If the stress at the connection is higher than the allowable, then go for a
pad with parent pipe thk and material.
Pads at bends are, generally, not recommended due to the economics and
flexibility reasons. It reduces flexibility and the pad at bend has to be
cut from another bend. Hence double the cost.
I hope this clarifies your query.
Best Regards.

Subject: [PipingDesign] Pipe
support-Trunnion reinforce pad

Dear All,
Regarding Trunnion Pipe supports , I've seen different books, project specs &..... but unfortunately I couldn't found any rule to use or not using reinforce pads in trunnions( for process industry / Normally CS pipes).
In some project specs, using of them recommended for supporting pipes with large NPS (16" or larger) but in some others I've seen the table for reinforced trunnion supports 3" NPS and above!!!
Shortly, Is there any certain criteria for using or not using of Reinforce pads in design of Trunnion pipe supports.
Thanks.
Ali
