Hi,
In my end of the piping business, the terms upstream and downstream are used to refer to the flow of fluids, slurry, median, etc. as to the placement of components or equipment in the pipeline. Imagine a pipeline, running from left to right. On the right end you have a pump, then there is a valve (V1), further right is another valve (V2), and finally on the far right end your pipeline is a tank. The fluid flows from the pump to the tank, or left to right. With this scenario, V1 is downstream of the pump, but upstream of V2 and the Tank. The pump is upstream of V1, V2, and the Tank. Just like standing on a river bank with the river flowing from your left to your right. The water to your left is upstream of you, the water to the right is downstrem of you.
Hope this helps and it makes some sense.
