I once used a pipe detector that generated a radio signal in a metallic pipeline. You placed a radio signal generator over the line and then followed the radio signal with a wand that you waved over the ground like a metal detector. So you should have no problem determining if the pipe is metallic. All you need to determine now is if the metallic pipe is magnetic. There must be something around to do that.
