Proj. software
i liked timeline because it easily did what you want and was a lot cheaper
than MS proj or Prim., but had all the major tools the others had at the
time. I dont think its still around. I agree all comments re MS proj. It
forces you into following its ass backards approaches, with no flexibility.
unfortunatley MS proj is rampant.

Thanks Iqbal
the problem I normally suffer with PM software is working backwards from
an immoveable completion date. I enter my tasks, manpower and duration
at manpower level. Then I put in my start date and it all turns to poo.
What I want is for the manpower requirements to be increased to reflect
the effort required in a given timespan.
Used to have a spreadsheet that handled this plus precursors, but it has
been misplaced. I expect Project can do this, but the method is not
immediately apparent.
I can force Excel to do it, but its not very professional. Have not yet
managed to get excel to do it.
An example:
Input Task: Fit, remove valve
Input task time estimate: 8 Hrs
Input manning estimate: 2 men
Input max time available: 4 Hrs
Required outcome: 4 men X 4 hours (plus whatever I decide to add to
allow for the extra effort concentration).
Yes I know if 2 men can dig a hole in 8 hours, then 2000 men cannot dig the same hole in 28.8 seconds; that's why I'm here.
Is there a way to do this? I had a go at resource levelling functions but got more poo.
Should I go to school?
Cheers
Steve

Just sharing a bit of more on Primavera... 1. Sure Primavera Project Planner (P3) is not cheap but then they have introduced the features of piecemeal rates based on usage. You don't even need to install all the huge backend files/ data. 2. Primavera has far more number of features and I mean good features. 3. It is also user friendly and the newer versions are better placed at that. 4. The number of activities that could be put in P3 is very large (don't remember exactly) and will definitely take care of the largest project. 5. The new versions are web-enabled and thus a lot of flexibility in terms of updating data. Many other good features have been added.

Steve,
Prima Vera is not cheap, and it is not easy to learn or as user-friendly as MS project (No undo button, dos file structure etc.) But if you want to do resource driven activity then Prmavera is the only way to go. You might want to take a look at Suretrak Project Manager as well before you make your decision.

Zeki

Hi Rick
by far by who and where?
I heard the big boys use Prima Vera and lesser mortals use Project. I am a lesser mortal. A few of the big boys I spoke to use Prima Vera in-house but Project to clients because of software availability. Is this true or are they having me on? It wouldn't be the first time they have.
Cheers
Steve

PRIMAVERA is by far the most commonly used software in planning and cost scheduling tasks.
