Mr Liu,

Generally the Can plate has std dimensions (irrespective of pipe size). The shoe/base support is used to transmit the pipe load uniformly on the top plate on the can. This is possible because both the surfaces are flat. The contact is a surface contact.

Whereas if pipe is resting on the can plate then the contact would be a line contact which means in case of lateral movement of the pipe the load transmitted could not be uniform and will be eccentric loading on the spring.

However this can be achieved by minimising the lateral displacement of pipe at the spring support. Or the best way is provide a shoe/saddle with just 50mm height. Another solution, not preferred, but could be to design a spring hanger and hang it from a tee post.

With best regards.

Has everyone designed a spring can so that the can is under bare piping only? (Most of the design I've seen is either base support or a shoe support welded to pipe first)

I'm designing a NG system (control station) which has limited head room, so I'm thinking delete the base support and let the pipe sit right on the top of the can, and the can will be bolted to the base plate on the concret foudation.

Does my idea look ok? Can whoever have similar experice give me a hand please.
