Testing or Examination of the welds most of the time are covered by Codes

for instance ASME Section III, Division I - NC (Class II Piping) Section NC - 5222 that covers Piping, Pump and Valve Welded Joints States:

  1. Butt welded joints shall be radiogragraphed
  2. Fillet and partial penetratin welded joints shall be examined by either the magnetic particle or liquid penetrant method.

Beside this welding efficiency is an important aspects in selection of pipe thickness which can only be evaluated by the type of test taken.
