Hello,

The critical time can be estimated by using the following:
t=(2xL)/C
L - Pipe length --> 100,000 m
C - Wave velocity in pipe ~ 1000 m/sec

t= 200 sec.

To prevent water hammer you have to close or open valve slower then 200 sec. (more then 3 min).
