With some exposure I had in designing high pressure valves with large dimeter
flanges, I would
like to share a few thoughts.
Larger size flanges for piping and valve applications are covered in ASME B16.47
(There are
two series - large and compact covered in the standard MSS SP 44. They are also
available in API 605 (compact)
and ASME B16.47 (large)). ASME B16.47 covers flanges upto 26" and Class ratings
of upto and including 900.
Another reference available is API 6A Specification for Wellhead and Christmas
Tree Equipment which covers
flanges from 2.1/16" to 21.1/4" and in working pressures 2000 psi to 20000 psi.
API Bulletin 6AF covers the
technical capabilities of these flanges with load and torque capacity curves.
I happened to be in both the upstream and downstream industries. Hence, to
design your flange I think that
you could compare the available information and run calculations to satisfy that
your flange design is
as per the acceptance criteria. For example, you can get some clues by comparing
the dimensions for some large
size high pressure flanges (for eg. 20" or 24" Cl 900) from B16.47 and run ASME
Section VIII Div 1 flange
calculations. You can also compare your flange stresses with that of the ASME
flange as a proof of design
verification. There are handy Finite Element Analysis tools available to analyse
such cases. But please note
that you are making assumptions. Also the acceptance criteria and allowable
stress values for flanges in
ASME standards and API standard could be quite different.
Though I am not able to give you a readymade solution, I little bit of hardwork
in understanding the above
standards should help you solve this problem. I am curious to know what the
other members also think about this.

None of my references show this as a standard size. The listing for
B16.5 stops at 12 inches. It's a long shot but you might find for your
service that a 24 IPS cl1500 meets your requirements. Check the
pressure temperature rating tables for cl 1500 The tables show that
most of the class 1500 flanges are rated for pressures exceeding 2400
psi for temperatures of 750F. Or try running the ASME Section VIII Div
1 flange calculation for your specific service and gasket loading in a
cl1500 flange.
