No body will advice to set up a boiler and other facilities just for
steam tracing. Comparison was for steam tracing vs electrical heat
tracing. If option is there steam tracing is obvious I meant to say
that. In co generation plant you may not have steam. By waste heat
recovery system you can generate steam but lots of complexities. Hence
no steam available and electrical tracing is the obvious choice.

As mentioned by Tanmoy, if steam is already available , means if it is adjacent to a refinery than steam tracing will be cheaper. However if it is a stand alone facility than you have to look at intricacies associated with statutory regulations for installation and operation of Boilers, specialied staff for operation and maintenance of boiler and maintaining a steam system can be painful . For a stand alone system , nowadays many companies are pereferring to go for Skin effect heat tracing system which is easier to maintain and you can have precision control on temperatures which is not always possible with steam system .Also electricity is not always generated from steam .INfact in cogeneration plant , steam and electricity are generated, However if you need to have a proper comparative of electrical and steam tracing , speak to one supplier may be Thermon .
