Re: OT: Arabic Greeting

Dear friends,
Well, it is long since I “wrote” something. This ongoing dialogue prompts me to do that.
I happen to be a Hindu, from India, now living in the Arab Emirates. That justifies me to make remarks on both the regions.
“Namah Te” is two words in Sanskrit language which when combined reads as “Namaste”. It means “Wishes” “to you”. The formal “hand shake” was not originally practiced in India, but nowadays it is a common thing. The spoken word of Namaste is to be accompanied with the joining of both the palms in front of the chin, in an imaginary vertical plane, accompanied by a bright smile on the lips. The left palm symbolizes “me” and the right palm is for “you”. The whole action means that you and I are “together” or “one and the same”. That is the display of affection, affinity, sincerity, attachment, closeness or intimacy.
Now coming to the Arabic, these are the words of greeting. Please excuse me if I had spelt them incorrectly. I am new here and have not yet acquired any level of proficiency in this blessed language. My Arabic friends may correct me!

Good morning (initiation) : Sabha al kheer
Good morning (reciprocation): Sabha hinnoor
Good evening (initiation) : Masa ilkheer
Good evening (reciprocation): Masa innoor
Good bye : Ma assalama

Very well, God is graceful : Bikheer; alhamdulillah

Bikheer; alhamdulillah,

C. V. Gangadharan
