RE: Meetings [bcc][faked-from][mx][spf][bayes]

For many of the applications and innovations of Apple (and Microsoft), they just freely adopted or adapted from what Xerox had developed before. Xerox had some enlightened management for a while, and hired really good, creative people and told them to have fun; they developed PCs, Windows/MacOS, GUIs, the mouse, among other things. Then, Xerox management geniuses wanted to know what they got for their investment, figured all this "pie in the sky" stuff had no future (who would want a computer in his home, and what would he do with it??), fired the creative innovators (to save money), invited a few geeks in (including Steve Wozniak and Bill Gates, a couple of college drop out dorks who just wanted to see it), allowed them to use whatever they saw (afterall it had no value) for nothing. Gates and Woz were friends doing sort of related things in the garage, and ended up taking different routes. Yea, Apple was the first to commercialize, but the ideas and concepts came from Xerox (and what has that company done in the last 20 years?).

I think this is just more fodder for the article.

I liked it myself. There's a comuter and software company that personifies everything Graham ascribed to bloggers and open source software, without the sloppy reporting you see on blogs and the need to do everything yourself. Apple has been in the forefront of technology for 20 years--without Apple, Microsoft would be nowhere because they'd have no one to copy.
