As a start you can check out Process Industry Practices recommendations.
Their website: <a href="http://www.pip.org/">http://www.pip.org/</a> See page 3/4 pf PIP's sample Class 150 Piping Material Spec for a recommended criteria for selecting the type of branch connetion.
You should obtain the official copy of piping spec for your piping class.
