Paul,

It could be as simple as asking your self Rudyard Kiplings six little words before submitting the question:

Who--Who am I? Title , role etc Add to your email signature. This tells the Forum who they are dealing with and will allow the responses to be phrased accordingly.

What- What do I want to know? Interpetation of a Code, Clarification of..., website for XYZ, I have already looked at ASME XYZ but...

Why- Why do I need to know this? Have to design XXX, Cant find reference in ASME XXXX, I dont know anything about this subject but want to earn from my peers.

Where- Where am I going to apply this information, refinery, chemical plant, home, boat, dinner party chat

When - When will I use it? Now, general question no timing, yesterday     How-How will I use the information, Submit to my supervisor, issue a specification, challenge a Contractor, writing a standard, buying software and want to know whats good..

I have these six words on a post it on my laptop and pose the questions before contacting people for information.

Hope this invokes some thoughts

regards

Geoff

Let's hear onlist from moderators and other concerned individuals about how inquiries from newcomers should be managed.

By this I mean a comprehensive "Welcome message" (which includes the rules and tips) for when people join the list and an additional set of suggestions for moderators to use when people post unclear, vague or just plain unanswerable queries.

Please post suggestions in point form with a short justification.

I'll compile all the ideas (after input from the group) and make it into a sort of official guideline.

Paul
