HydroTest : Piping under the ASME B31 Scope Three things.

1)Hydro for new fab/installation.
2)Hydro for piping system already in-service.
3)Special case such as hydro related to hot tapping.

  1. For new piping such as those in process industries, the hydro is done in accordance with 345 Testing, Chapter VI of ASME b31.3 -2002.
  2. Piping already in-service requiring alteration, mods, repair or T&I then hydro in accordance with 5.7 Pressure Testing of PIping SYstem, API 570 Piping Inspection Code, Addendum 2, Dec 2001. C.Sometimes situation arises where mods, repair or alteration will need to be completed while the line is in-service (on-stream) such as hot tapping. In such cases, the hydro is done in accordance with Section 6.5 Test the weld and hot tapping machine per API 2201 4th Ed, Sep 1995 - Procedures for Welding/Hot Tapping on Eqpt in Service.

There are instances where hydro simply couldnt be done and this is where you need the services of a professional engineer.
