Ralph ,

Would you use a dye penetrant test to check for cracks?

A good source of information for stainless steel is www.nidi.org.au.

The ones ive seen are near the HAZ such as the pipe and the flange weld joint. I have also seen it happen in the channel section of a heat exchanger. NACE has also some article on this subject. But in a lot of cases where welding is applied, NO pwht has ever been done. What I'll do is do remove areas where SCC is present. Remove any undue strain imposed. Weld, hydro (not to 1.5X) to ensure all leakers were fixed, return back to service and monitor. For 304L SS (not normally stress relieved), verify that theres no significant amount of Cl in the system.
