Why not use Mathcad or TK Solver and the calculation presented does look exactly like a hand calculation. You can also link data to Excel if you need to. You can print Mathcad to PDF or MS MDI files.

Mathcad allows you to debug with tracing so you can check everystep of the way.

That's a smart move. I've done the same thing with Excel for Section VIII calculations and I've been very pleased. One thing you might want to consider--linking your Excel workbook to calculation sheets formatted in MS Word, so your results are presented as if they were manual calculations, with the formulas and values provided. When you need to check the results independently (which is every single time you do arithmetic!) or make submittals it's a lot easier to review than printed out spreadsheets. I've used the Print Merge feature in Word to read a text file output from Excel into a Word template and make a helluva nice looking calculation sheet (If I do say so myself...)
