I have no control over what advertising gets automatically added to messages to the list, that is one reason I'm developing the discussion website.

Have you turned off HTML rendering in your email program? In many cases it is enabled by default so people can see all the pretty colours and pictures (and advertising, coincidentally enough) but it most often causes more problems than it's worth.
