I think a whole lot can go in to the subjects of "sizing" and "design velocity"
of piping. As a start and for the specific applications you note, you may wish
to obtain some basic references (e.g. see the couple, specific references noted
in the thread at http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=133700&page=4 ),
basic standards (e.g. ANSI/AWWA) and manufacturer's manuals, as well as search
the archives of this and other forums as you wish. With all the choices of
materials, dimensions, properties, and also in some cases conflicting
information out there today with regard to same, to do this right for the
ultimate long-term benefit for an Owner, taxpayers, and the environment probably
requires all this, as well as perhaps a good bit of experience and perhaps
integrity as well. I think reputable "civil", other engineers, and others
working for consultants and utilities make a living out of doing this and other
engineering work.
