Re: Design velocity.

Distribution piping in the US is primarily ductile iron with concrete lining and asphaltic coating. DI has good lifetime, decent corrosion resistance (especially if polyethelene wrapped), less quality control needed for good joints. DI is also easier to work with while live or in wet conditions, although more products are coming out for hot tap and repairs for different plastic pipes.

Plastics have been used, especially in areas of high/fast growth as they can be lower initial cost and faster installation. PVC has a bad history in the US. HDPE looks promising, but is newer technology (at least in the US - and also US does not use the bidirectional crosslinked HDPE that is available in many other places) with little lifespan data.

Steel or concrete pipe are also used, although more for transmission.

AWWA publishes a manual, Pipe Materials Selection Manual, with pros and cons of different piping materials as well as some historical data.
