Re: Remote Working

Paul,

I do it all the time but I am in a specialist field. Doing waterhammer analysis and network hydraulic design I am able to undertake engineering exercises all over the world.

Occasionally I travel to meet my clients but invariably they pay my invoice and I may never even have had voice contact.

The key is having a specialty that is in demand because its rare or tough, a client base that spreads through word of mouth and the ability to go 12months without income so you dont starve. You have to earn street "cred" to become the expert in your field.

People like Red Adair gave me inspiration.

Perhaps you could offer a reviewers service. Drawings could be sent to you electronically, you could review them not only for the piping expertise thereon but also for the way the CAD files are structured. you could perhaps get into the field of training CAD drafters and their managers on practical ways of improving productivity and accuracy. Fill the gap between the software developer and the drafter to get the best out of the tools.

Have any listmembers successfully worked via email on larger projects? If so, what were the problems experienced?

Obviously, a main concern would be dealing with managers who like to have day-to-day control over the workers.

Paul
