All that you have when you take a hipshot is a hipshot. Not much better than a guess unless you've been through the exercise enough times to know how to adjust for the effects of what you haven't quantified. Experienced people can often do this if their experience is the right sort.

My experience is that a lot more people think they can do it than actually can. My experience also tells me that someone who wants a quickie chart to figure pipe thickness doesn't have the experience he needs to use such a chart with any degree of prudence and needs to learn the basics before relying on quickie charts and rules of thumb.
