Checkout AWWA Standard C207 for steel pipe flanges for waterworks
service. In Section 2 Material, the proper gasket to be used is
specified. Ive got an old copy of C207, the gasket recommended is
gasket ring â and I normally specify a 1/8 inch thick nonasbestos
with NBR binder for flat faced (im used to Class E) for water
service .
Normally sprial wound gasket such as those made by flexitalic are
used with RF type flanges. John H. Bickford has written two
excellent books related to gasketed and bolted joints.
Like for example in his book Gaskets and the GAsketed JOints, you
may find Chapter 11 interesting - Bolted Flanged Connections with
Full-Face Gaskets.
