Being somewhat fresh out of Uni, I have had no experiences with the old way of drafting by hand. Whilst I was studying I was taught the ins and outs of Autocad and I can communicate with draftsman efficiently because of this but I would love to have seen how they did it. Painstaking yet extremely satisfying I would imagine it to be.
I definitely agree with Geoff , my experiences with draftsmen here in Oz are fantastic.

Paul,
I was a draughtsman on the board long before I was allowed to be an engineer. Even though I had my qualifications I had to learn why things were designed and layed out the way they were.
The draughtsman is as essential to the engineer as a nurse to a doctor, solicitor to a barrister and a beat cop to a detective. They all function as a team with different skills. Each respects each other. Each leads when it is appropriate.
I am amazed and appalled that you find that draughting skills have been lost to this point. It certainly isnt my experience downunder. Perhaps its time for you shift to another hemisphere where your skills would be appreciated.
