Randy,
"gi" is a common description in SE Asia and the sub continent for galvanised iron. Left over from the British Raj. Even though it is galvanised steel now it is still referred to as "gi".
The fact is most have moved away from gi and use modern thermoplastics like ABS, PP, UpVC, PE etc.

Is it possible this is meant to be a sort of mechanical "Gibault"-type joint
(or mechanical joint collar or sleeve?) Such a structure, similar to a flanged
adapter(or) or Dresser/Smith-Blair et al coupling, would allow "drop-in" (or
pull out) assembly (or disassembly) e.g. between flanges (see also the last
fitting, the "collar" at the site
http://www.acipco.com/international/products/Sec10.pdf. It should be noted that
just a mechanical sleeve per se between flanges would not however provide
longitudinal restraint to a system, if this was necessary in the application (so
rods across flanges or other restraint would have to be provided, if restraint
is needed). Special mechanically joined structures sometimes referred to as
"dismantling joints" or restrained flange adapters often contain restraint
features in the devices. You could perhaps do an internet search with the help
of these terms for more information, if this doesn't "hit it".

Subject: [PipingDesign] gi bolt type joint.
Hello piping experts,
Can anybody tell me something about gi bolt type joint. This is a case
of flanged spool piece( 500 mm) between two fixed flanged ends in the
water pipe.
For removal of gasket the above type of joint is recommended. If someone
can give some details/ information than it will be a great help.
Thanks & regards
