Hi Shankar!

Since Piping Engineering is not taught as a part of Mechanical Engineering, your question before entering this field is well timed and commendable. Answers to such question will give you an idea whether the field of work you are about to enter will interest you or not. Though your questions are not very clear, I will try to write considering your fresh graduate level.

First of all try to find our what the piping engineering is all about and what kind of work and activities are involved. You may take advice of your friends or people who are already in this field.

Piping engineering generally have 3 main activity groups- (1) Piping Design & Layout, (2) Stress analysis & Support Design & (3) Material specification group. Depending on the size of the organization further sub-grouping can be seen. However in small companies there may not be any such grouping at all.

Generally when you join any professional Engineering or EPC company, they will give you intensive training on all three activities mentioned above and also associated software used. At the end of training you may or may not have choice to select the activity of your interest. Mostly you will be working on one of this activity.

Furthermore you will be given company specifications and design practices. Read them well and ask questions to your seniors over there. Visit library of the company and you may find many books on it. In initial period you may not expect any responsible work and smallest work you do may be checked by your seniors. Also many organization give opportunity to work in all the activities on rotational basis.

Regarding Home work and subjects: Reply of Umesh K. N. is very good. Follow his advice.

Finally don't get disheartened by replies of some people who think that because they mentor the others they can be harsh and abusive. You may come across many such people in your professional life also. First they should learn the true meaning of Mentor- "A wise and trusted guide and advisor". Having replied to the one's question, it is good to end it with advisory note on how to ask the question, how to write a subject line etc. Instead people want to show smartness by commenting each and every aspect of question as if they are checking and commenting some engineering drawing or calculations. I pity on the people who thinks because they became engineer from the draftsman/craftsman, other should also follow the same path. I don't know in with century they live !!!!!!! It seems they are the frog confined in the well totally unaware what is sea and what's going on in the world!!!!!!

Remember all who have reached senior position were once a fresh graduate like you. Don't get impressed by somebody's position or experience. I have seen many dumb people near to their retirement age and you will find many helping and knowledgeable people with mid-level experience.
