Since we are presently using the laser scan technology extensively on the
present project.
I would definitely like to add that the laser scan technology indeed has
come a long way !!
The laser scan data can now be seamlessly integrated into PDS / similar 3D softw's and is big boon while undertaking revamp/ expansion jobs. Though it is still an expensive process but then we save a big chunk in terms of maintaining a full crew at site whose sole job is only to measure the existing plant up & down.
With laser scan the whole plant is available on the designers desktop and
is just a click away !!
I don't complete rule out the site crew efforts but then it gets reduced
phenomenally and they can focus on other pertinent site issues!
Thanks & Best Regards,

This technology is *very* interesting but doesn't seem to be very popular yet. Perhaps it is perceived as being too expensive or likely buggy/unreliable.
On the other hand, a lot of computer-based technology in this field has been way oversold as to actual capabilities and true, long-term cost.
