RE: Valve identification on P&IDs

Through my extensive experience doing P&ID's, I got to tell you, putting the valve numbers on the drawing is VERY important. I've done proposal stage P&ID's which didn't require numbers (mainly because they weren't issued yet) and I've done project-level P&ID's which included tag numbers. And if done properly and with a good bit of thought and care put into it by the drafter you should have absolutely NO problems for errors. The errors will come if you assign numbers, then later add or delete valves and expect the numbers to shift accordingly. Because a lot of times the drafter has no clue that valves have appeared or disappeared from the scope, and the engineer normally knows of the scope change and doesn't take into account that numbers are affected. So good communication is required.

And if the engineer can produce a valve list on Excel or something in conjunction with the numbers being added to the P&ID, that'll also make the designer's life a whole lot easier when developing the physicals as well.

I'm probably not telling you anything you haven't heard from someone there already, but I'm just giving you my viewpoint. And this is coming from a guy that specialized in P&ID's for over a decade.

  1. Are the numbers already assigned and only need marked up on the P&ID's?
  2. If no numbers are assigned yet, are you going to use your own numbers or does the client spec call out for a specialized numbering format?

Subject: [PipingDesign] Valve identification on P&IDs

Hi all,
I'm just doing a small inquiry. We have had discussions at work on the value of putting valve tags on the P&IDs; the valve identification code that is in the piping specifications for hand opertated valves. Currently this isn't done. All that shows up on the P&ID is the valve symbol, so if it is necessary to know more, e.g. trim, handwheel or gear op., etc. you have to go to the piping specifications. Our construction group are pushing for it as it will make their job easier when they do a final walk through of the systems. Engineering are reluctant because of the amount of work and the possibility of error. We do produce isometrics from a 3D model which has a complete BOM, which includes, of course, the valve tags.

What's your experience? Value added or not?
