John - Normally all cold insulation is installed with "cradels" basically
a curved section of plate - which distribute forces & prevent insulation
crushing -

[PipingDesign] Re: question
Hello all,
One possibility is in cases where the piping bears directly upon the
rack steel without shoes being used. Many cryogenic lines are
insulated with materials that have very limited weight bearing
capacity so to prevent the insulation from "crushing" the spans
between supporting steel is reduced.
