Hi Richard,
I guess that you are looking for guidance on onshore equipment layout. Normally
project has specfic requirement for distance, orientation within an unit for
equipments. These are mandated by safety, construction, maintenance, operation
and economics. A good start point will be IRI(Industrial Risk Insurance)
document. Normally lot of discplines shall get involved starting from FEED till
construction stage. Involve Contruction group as soon as possible, this aspect
normally get neglected and in few cases may create problem especially when your
equipment delivery dictates but then it might be too late.
Hope this helps

I think book of "Ed bausbacher & Roger Hunt's (Process Plant layout and piping Design)
Will help you in this matter.
