If the difference in thermal growths along the pipe, at the pipe and at the shoe bottom, is appreciable. I suppose the shoe would literally arch away from the pipe. Is that the high strain?

so while where its attached to the pipe it may be at 1100F at the bottom of the saddle or shoe it may only be @ 300 - 400 F. This differential may cause extremely high strains to form at the weld line.
