When it is 90% of the SMYS stress. If the test pressure is calculated on the basis of the measured actual thickness of the new piping. Not merely deducting the -ve mill tolerance. Yes, in most cases when a flange is present, it is the limiting component.

Lube oil and seal oil piping must be exempted because they may not be treated that critical?

Vacuum piping, if that is the exclusive pressure. But what if the vacuum is a part condition and the piping is also pressure rated for the normal pressure of operation. What about flare lines, are they service tested? Should not be pneumatic?

There could be a condition where the pipe thickness may be governing. I think, The text in the SAES should have been worded that the combined stress at hydrotest shall not exceed the 90% SMYS value.

Dear Sajit

The test pressure producing hoop stress of 90% of SMYS is for newly constructed in-plant piping. There are several exceptions to this value in case the line is limited by flanges, valves or other component. Furthermore, this 90% of the SMYS value is not applicable for lube and seal oil piping, vacuum piping, flare lines. In conclusion, the test pressure shall not be less than the minimum test pressure per ASME B31.3 paragraph 345.4.2. This is the value should aways be remembered
