Subject: RE: [PipingDesign] Six Sigma
Hi Rajkumar MThats an interesting question and one I have looked at on several occasions.
Six Sigma (SS) sets up a framework intended to minimise the generation
of defects, which is presumed to result in a happy customer and a
healthy business. This requires error identification, measurement and
feedback/control sysytems as per most error based quality control
systems.
SS emphasises the use of advanced data handling techniques, meaning it
is more suited to processes where there are significant amounts of data
produced, such as in a mass production environment. Also it is generally
pitched at the business level.
There may be some benefit in applying SS quality practices to a
production type piping (design) environment, but probably little
advantage in applying them to one-off design units where the objectives
and measurables are not so clearly defined.
In all design environments, there needs to be some form of quality monitoring and feedback control but the SS system is not a universal panacea, just like the ISO 9000 standards etc etc.
Six Sigma differs from ISO (TQM - I'm a bit out of date on this, sorry) systems is that external review by an accredited party is not required, so its cheaper but more open to abuse.
Personally, for a design environment I much prefer the Kaisen or the "quality circle" approaches as they more positive, being driven by innovation and opportunities for improvement rather than the identification and minimisation of errors.
You can make a lot of money selling SS systems and information to management though.
Cheers
Steve

Hi all,I am Rajkumar from India, practicing piping. (Usually Doctors & advocates pronounce this way as they practice their profession. But, in my view as a Piping Professional we also do practice till end to become experts in our field). Now, my doubt is,I had heard about Six Sigma concepts, and googled it and gone through the basic concepts of it. It is being used & followed in many production and even in many Design industries. Whether Six Sigma can be applied in Piping industries? or Is there any companies in Piping field that follow six sigma concepts?this question is just out of my curiosity... any informative reply will clarify me.Regards,Rajkumar
