Ken wrote <the flow element and flow element indicator.in horizontal position with straight runs prior to entering the fittings. But, we disagree in the installation of the fittings in vertical position, although there is still a straight run in the arrangement. One is telling that it is OK and the other one is NOT. Also, we did not achieve the minimum length of straight runs. Can you shed some light with my query?> Ken - I must presume that you have an orifice plate. I have seen both vertical up-flow & down-flow but these types of installations normally come to be by result of poor piping design. Each owner will have their individual "levels of tolerance" for these non standard types of installations. You state that sufficient upstream distance does not exist. Is this due too overall layout constrictions? examine your overall piping system pressure drops & energy constraints. If tight space exists a different beta ratio orifice plate can be installed (if allowed by process group) which will require less upstream straight run.
